Passive film
The thin, self-repairing oxide layer that gives stainless steels, titanium and similar alloys their corrosion resistance. It is the film that resists attack, not the bulk metal — so anything that stops the film re-forming removes the protection. Titanium needs moisture to maintain it, which is why it survives wet chlorine but can ignite in dry chlorine.
