Weld overlay
A corrosion-resistant alloy deposited onto carbon steel by welding, rather than bonded at the mill as clad plate is. Used where geometry makes clad plate impractical — nozzles, seal faces, local repairs. Repairs to an overlay need the overlay procedure, since the wrong consumable dilutes the alloy and destroys its resistance exactly where the repair was made.
