Lamellar tearing
Cracking beneath a weld, running parallel to the plate surface. Rolling flattens non-metallic inclusions into planes lying along the plate, so plate is weakest through its thickness — and a joint that strains it that way can tear it open. Defended against with through-thickness tested plate, joint redesign, low-hydrogen consumables and buttering.
