Self-Monitoring and Diagnosis of Field Devices

The recommendation that reduces the many diagnostics a smart field device produces to four condition states — failure, function check, out of specification and maintenance required — each with a defined symbol and a defined expectation of the operator. Its value to an integrity programme is that it makes device diagnostics actionable: a maintenance-required state belongs on a work list, while a function check state explains why a reading should not be trusted right now, and conflating the two is how diagnostic information gets ignored.

This is an explanation, not the standard. PipingInspector is not affiliated with NAMUR and reproduces no part of the document. Always work to the current edition of the standard itself and to your project specification.
