Equipment Protection by Intrinsic Safety
Intrinsic safety: limiting the energy in a circuit so it cannot ignite the atmosphere even under fault. It is the protection concept that allows live work in a hazardous area, and it depends on the whole loop being assessed, not just the field device.
This is an explanation, not the standard. PipingInspector is not affiliated with IEC and reproduces no part of the document. Always work to the current edition of the standard itself and to your project specification.
